MG Setu Downstream Lane dismantled
The Downstream Lane or Eastern Flank of Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Setu over River Ganga in Patna has been dismantled by Afcons-Sibmost JV. A total of 46 spans were taken down between November 2020 and July 2021, 26 of which were on land area and the rest along the river.
Each of the dismantled spans:
• Was 121m in length
• Had 40 pre-cast segments weighing 30-80MT
• Had varying depths of pre-cast segments (2.1-7.5m)
The team has completed the dismantling of the Downstream Lane over 500 days quicker than the Upstream Lane despite Covid-restrictions.
The project involved dismantling concrete to the tune of about 75000cum, which was never attempted in India earlier. The new superstructure will use a total of 66,360MT of steel or about seven times the amount used in the construction of Eiffel Tower. The structure uses High Performance Steel that is built to give MG Setu a lifespan of a 100 years.
The Upstream or the Western Flank of the bridge is operational since July 2020 after being inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Road Transport and Highways & Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Mr Nitin Gadkari.
The iconic MG Setu is India’s first Balanced Cantilever Bridge to be dismantled and converted into a Simply Supported Bridge. The 5.57km bridge is one of the longest river bridges in India.
